Telesat Lightspeed First Satellites Launch

Updated from live prices and SEC filings

Telesat's first two Lightspeed satellites, built by MDA Space, will now ride on a third-party Falcon 9 around June 2027 rather than in December 2026. The slip pushes global Lightspeed service back to the end of the second quarter of 2028.

Scheduled: Around June 2027 (Telesat: rideshare on a third-party Falcon 9 in mid-2027) · Falcon 9 (rideshare). Companies involved: Telesat (TSAT), MDA Space (MDA).

Why it matters for the stocks

  • On its third quarter 2026 call, Telesat said it would not use one of its own Falcon 9 slots for two satellites and will instead ride on a third-party Falcon 9 in mid-2027; after about two months of in-orbit testing it will start launching 15 satellites per Falcon 9 (Via Satellite).
  • Global service moves from the end of the first quarter to the end of the second quarter of 2028, while Telesat says service in higher latitudes, including for the Canadian military in the Arctic, still starts by the end of the first quarter of 2028 (Via Satellite).
  • Telesat reported a Lightspeed contractual backlog of $5.6 billion and, in August 2026, signed a $2.7 billion polar satellite communications contract with Canada's Defence Investment Agency (SpaceQ).
  • MDA Space builds the Lightspeed satellites; an August 2026 order for 27 more took its total to 225 and added $474 million to the contract value (MDA Space).
  • Lightspeed is meant to offset declines in Telesat's geostationary business (SpaceNews).
  • Telesat reported CA$3.1 billion of GEO debt maturing between December 2026 and October 2027 and is seeking to refinance it (Via Satellite).
