When is Rocket Lab's Neutron first launch?

Updated from live prices and SEC filings

Rocket Lab now expects Neutron's first launch in 2027, not Q4 2026, and will set a date only after tank testing ends, which it expects by the end of Q1 2027. Our sums: the delay day cut about $2.5B from its market value, yet its $2.39B of cash and securities covers about 25 quarters of H1 2026 cash burn.

The short answer

Rocket Lab has not given a date. On 14 October 2026 it said Neutron's inaugural launch is now expected to occur in 2027. In August it had said Stage 1 tank production was aligned with delivering Neutron to the launch pad in Q4 2026.

The cause is the first-stage tank. On the briefing, the chief executive said voids had formed within the carbon composite layers of the propellant dome during manufacturing, that the problem is solved, and that cryo and hydrostatic testing should finish before the end of Q1 2027, at which point Rocket Lab will set a new launch date. So the earliest point at which a firm date can be given is roughly the end of March 2027, and the launch itself would follow after that.

Orbit Alpha view: a timing problem, not a funding problem

The delay hurt the share price more than the balance sheet. Rocket Lab ended June 2026 with $2.39B of cash and marketable securities after raising $1.53B through at-the-market share sales in the first half. In that half it used $134.4M in operations and spent $53.1M on equipment, about $94M a quarter. At that pace the cash would last about 25 quarters, so another quarter or two of Neutron work does not force a raise on its own.

Two points stand out. First, on the day of the news the market took off roughly the value of Rocket Lab's entire $2.36B backlog, which shows how much of the valuation rests on Neutron rather than on contracted work. Second, most of the fall since then is not about Neutron: the shares dropped 12.2% on 5 November alone as space stocks sold off alongside SpaceX. The cash cover also has a caveat: the Iridium deal pays $27 in cash per Iridium share, backed by a $3.6B bridge loan commitment, so the cash pile is not all free for Neutron.

What the delay does cost is time. Analysts have noted that management ties reaching positive cash flow and profit to Neutron's first successful launch, so each quarter of slip pushes that point out. It also extends the period in which SpaceX's Falcon 9 faces no Neutron competition for medium-lift launches, a market Firefly is also aiming at with its planned Eclipse rocket.

How Neutron's date has moved

When saidFirst launch target
March 2021 (Neutron announced)2024
Later updates2025
November 20252026
August 2026Launch pad delivery in Q4 2026
14 October 20262027, date to be set after testing ends by end of Q1 2027

That is at least three years later than the first target. Neutron is designed to carry up to 13,000 kg to low Earth orbit, with a reusable first stage and a fairing that stays attached to the booster.

What to watch next

  • 9 November 2026: Q3 2026 results, the first chance to ask about Neutron since the delay, and any change to spending plans.
  • Q1 2027: end of cryo and hydrostatic testing of the redesigned tank, and the new launch date that Rocket Lab says will follow.
  • Neutron arriving at the launch pad, which had been the Q4 2026 milestone.
  • Cash: the Q3 balance sheet, at-the-market share sales and progress on Iridium, which Rocket Lab targets closing in mid-2027.

Questions and answers

Has Rocket Lab's Neutron launched yet?

No. As of 6 November 2026 Neutron has not flown. Rocket Lab expects its first launch in 2027.

Why was Neutron delayed again?

Rocket Lab found voids in the carbon composite layers of the first-stage propellant dome during manufacturing. It says the fix is in place, but tank testing will now run into Q1 2027.

When will Rocket Lab give a new Neutron launch date?

After cryo and hydrostatic testing of the tank, which it expects to finish before the end of Q1 2027.

How much did Rocket Lab stock fall on the Neutron delay?

It closed at $55.25 on 15 October 2026, down 6.64%. On our numbers that removed about $2.5B of market value.
